new era / new tribe
If millennials still managed to experience childhood without smartphones, then for zoomers the phone became an integral part of life from birth, so they learned to consume and process information much faster than their predecessors. The physical space between people has shrunk, turning the world into Marshall McLuhan's Global Village, where every person is at arm's length regardless of their physical location. Communication between people also becomes different: with new ethics, attempts appear to build horizontal relationships in which old values and hierarchies cease to work. The generation gap is widening even further.

In his work, Maxim Frolov combines various media: painting, collage, digital art, video art. The author was most influenced by the picture generation movement and artists of the 90s of the 20th century, known for their critical analysis of media culture. New Era / New Tribe is a series of works that includes painting, installation and sound art by the artist.

Woman is the central image and main character in Frolov’s works. This choice has nothing to do with sexualization, but rather is a reflection of the artist’s inner state associated with the rejection of patriarchal norms. Following Delacroix, Maxim sees the achievement of freedom, victory over ignorance, violence and oppression in the female form. And if Delacroix’s girl resembles an ancient goddess, then Frolov, inspired by Japan as an image of the future, depicts heroines from anime and Japanese pop art.

Returning to the question “Who will be taken into the future?” Kabakov, the artist replies that first of all, only those who are ready to change will be accepted into the future. Today's irreplaceable quality of a New Era representative is the ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.
